The exhibition The Birth of Modern Art: Sergey Shchukin’s Choice opens in the Manege of the Small Hermitage (The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg) on June 26, 2022.

The exhibition takes place within a large-scale project dedicated to the celebrated Russian art collectors, Sergey Shchukin and Morozov Brothers.

The series of exhibitions was initiated in 2016, when the Louis Vuitton Foundation hosted the exhibition Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collection from the State Hermitage and Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Summer of 2019 was marked by two joint exhibitions organized at the State Hermitage Museum (The Morozov Brothers. Great Russian Collectors) and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Shchukin: Biography of a Collection). The new Hermitage exhibition provides its visitors with an unparalleled overview of Shchukin’s collection, showcasing all the works by Cézanne, Gauguin and Matisse from the great collection as well as the paintings by Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, Derain and other masters of the new French painting. Over one hundred exhibits are displayed, including not only items from the Hermitage’s collections, but also paintings and African sculptures from the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
