7 July 2022

On July 7, 2022 the exhibition In the Footsteps of N. M. Miklouho-Maklay was opened in the Kronstadt History Museum.

The exhibition is based on the materials of legendary expeditions conducted by the scientist-humanitarian N. N. Miklouho-Maklay in the XIX century on New Guinea Island, as well as the modern research expeditions of the last third of the XX – early XXI centuries aimed at the exploration of the region. The exhibition features the private collection of the descendant and namesake of Nikolay Nikolayevich Miklouho-Maklay.

Having various talents and extraordinary passion for scientific knowledge, N. N. Miklouho-Maklay conducted ethnographical, anthropological, and natural-scientific researches in Europe, Africa, South America, South-Eastern Asia, Australia and Oceania for almost twenty years. Nevertheless, he became famous worldwide because of his expeditions to the north-eastern coast of New Guinea Island (Maklay Island) in the Southern Pacific Ocean in 1870-1880. Similarly to the first circumnavigation of the Earth in 1803 under the command of I. F. Krusenstern, the corvette Vityaz, led by N. M. Miklouho-Maklay, started its journey in Kronstadt.

The exposition showcases photographs, sketches, maps that will allow visitors to imagine the exciting expeditions of a real innovator and pioneer.

The exhibition will run until August 20, 2022.
