Marking the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great: The exhibition “Peter’s Shipwrights” opened in the Astrakhan Local History Museum

12 July 2022

From July 12, 2022 residents and guests of Astrakhan Region will have an opportunity to explore the mobile stand exhibition Peter’s Shipwrights, marking the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great, in the Local History Museum. It tells about the establishment of the Russian fleet and the invaluable contribution of Peter the Great to the development of the country. The project was initiated by the Peter’s Museums Assembly and the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve and is curated by the National Museum of Republic of Tatarstan.

The exhibition Peter’s Shipwrights is an example of museum cooperation. Four stands display information prepared for the exhibition by major museums of Russia, as well as museums that have small collections of exhibits associated with the Peter’s epoch.

The exhibition project tells about the history of Peter I, from the amusing flotillas to admiralties, the Baltic and Caspian Fleets, through the documents, images, maps and numismatics. Through the prism of shipbuilding, visitors will have an opportunity to learn about Peter Alexeyevich becoming Emperor Peter the Great and the fleet, founded by him, becoming the pillar of the Russian Empire. The exhibition also tells about the comrades and supporters of Peter I, ship engineers and common workers – about those without whom the Peter’s navy would’ve seized to exist.

The exhibition was already held in Ulyanovsk. It will run in Astrakhan until August 2. Then, it will be moved to other Russian cities associated with the history of shipbuilding and fleet of the Peter I’s epoch, such as Azov, Voronezh, Ryazan, Pereslavl-Zalessky.
