Marking the Year of the Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia: The exhibition, dedicated to the traditions of the Russian people from the collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography, opened in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

The Russian Museum of Ethnography (St. Petersburg) presents the exhibition We are Russians. Local Groups of the Russian People in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The grand opening of the exposition took place in the Chekhov Literary Art Book Museum “Sakhalin Island”. Sakhalin residents and guests will have an opportunity to learn about the cultural traditions of the local groups of the Russian people of the late XIX – first half of the XX century.

Russians, who over the centuries of their history settled on the vast Eurasian territory, identify themselves as one people with one orthodox faith and language. They have a common traditional culture, inherited from the ancestors. At the same time, there were also local groups, cultural traditions, language, faith and looks of which had specific characteristics.

The exhibition features costumes and individual items of clothing, home textile and utensils, household tools and attributes of games, examples of women’s handicraft and men’s craft, objects of cults of various groups of the Russian people in European Russia, Southern and Eastern Siberia. Photographs of the early XX century complement the image of diversity of every group being an essential part of the Russian people.
