Regions of Russia: The exhibition “A Trip to the East. Ostrogs of Siberia”, marking the 100th anniversary of the Yakut ASSR, opened in Vladivostok

16 August 2022

The exhibition A Trip to the East. Ostrogs of Siberia has opened in the Vladimir K. Arseniev Museum of Far East History (Vladivostok), marking the 100th anniversary of the Yakut ASSR. This is a joint project of the Vladimir K. Arseniev Museum of Far East History, the Yaroslavsky Yakutsk State United Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of the North and the Yamal-Nenets Regional Shemanovsky Museum-Exhibition Complex.

The exhibition explores the history of the development of the land behind the “Stone Zone”, from Ural to the Pacific Ocean. It tells the story of the unknown before XVI century region revealing its secrets to pioneers.

By changing the worldview of Russian people, a trip to the East led to the discovery of a new world which was measured in steps and marked with ostrogs – the first forts that later transformed into the first Siberian cities. This time is described in documents, reflected on maps and is preserved in objects and clothes that still remember the warmth of people who lived hundreds of years ago.

In four halls, there are showcased unique exhibits, telling about the life of the residents of the first Siberian ostrogs and the indigenous peoples of Siberia. These are archeological findings, discovered on the sites of the ostrogs, objects of everyday life and cult, books, drawings, sketches, photographs and documents of the time.

The exhibition will run until the end of September, 2022.
