25 August 2022

The Museum of the History of Religion (St. Petersburg) opened the exhibition "Hegumen of the Russian Land Sergius of Radonezh", dedicated to the life of the monk, his ascetic feat and peacemaking activities.

The exhibition is dedicated to the events that today have acquired particular relevance, and introduces Sergius of Radonezh, one of the most revered Russian saints, the founder of the Holy Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the teacher of many Russian ascetics, who more than 600 years ago blessed Moscow Prince Dmitry Ivanovich for the Battle of Kulikovo.

The exposition included more than 60 exhibits. The exhibition covers all the most famous episodes of the life of the monk: from the meeting of the lad Bartholomew (such was the worldly name given to Sergius at baptism) with the elder and the miraculous learning to read and write until the death of the monk within the walls of the Holy Trinity Lavra. Much attention is paid to the role played by Sergius of Radonezh in the outcome of the Battle of Kulikovo.

The exhibition features icons with hagiographic stamps, chromolithographs representing the works of the monk during his stay in the Holy Trinity Lavra, the life of Sergius, as well as products of monastic handicrafts for which the Lavra was famous in the 19th - early 20th centuries and much more.

The exhibition will be of interest both to researchers involved in the study of Russian history, art historians, religious scholars as well as to a wide range of visitors, especially students.

The exhibition will run until September 1, 2022.
