
Society and Culture: The “World of Knowledge” film festival in St. Petersburg to present films about the cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia
The XVII International Film Festival of Science Fiction and Research Films “World of Knowledge” will present films about the intangible cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia. The festival will take place in St. Petersburg on September 14-18, 2022.
«This year, World of Knowledge became officially called the festival of not only science fiction films, but also research films. Thus, this year’s theme Beyond Time and Space, spotlighting the intangible ethnic-cultural heritage of Russia, is dedicated to research films. The festival focuses on films about folklore and folklorists, ethnographers, philologists, traditions, feasts, rites, folk crafts», the representatives of the Gorky Film Studio said. The screenings will be timed to coincide with the Year of the Folk Art and Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia. In addition, the festival has announced the recruitment to the program of Russian films; anyone can apply until August 25. Full-length and short films of scientific-educational and research themes, made in 2021-2022, are accepted for participation. The screening of the film at the festival doesn’t have to be a premiere.
One of the special events of the festival will be a program, marking the 80th anniversary since the birth of a Russian movie director Vladimir Kobrin. He created educational and scientific films, in which he combined traditional technologies with an experimental computer image processing. Within the framework of the festival, a retrospective of Vladimir Kobrin’s films will take place, as well as a special program of Karina Karayeva Space is a Hostage of the Mind, the Mind is the Constructor of the Physical, featuring contemporary experimental works by young directors.
The full program of the festival is planned to be announced on September 4. The festival will be held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Its goal is the popularization of scientific and research films, the creation of new opportunities for self-realization of directors and artists.
