Marking the 1160th anniversary of Russian statehood: Sergei Prokofiev’s cantata “Alexander Nevsky” to be performed in Veliky Novgorod with the simultaneous screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s film of the same name

On September 21, 2022 Veliky Novgorod celebrates the 1160th anniversary of Russian statehood.

The most large-scale and massive celebratory event for Veliky Novgorod’s residents and guests will be the open-air performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s cantata “Alexander Nevsky” with the simultaneous screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s film of the same name, as well as a water show.

One of the most monumental works of Prokofiev, written for choir, mezzo-soprano and orchestra, in which significant events of the Russian history have been reflected, will be performed at the Sofia Embankment under the direction of the conductor of the Novgorod Regional Philharmonic Lev Dunayev. Over 160 musicians and vocalists from Veliky Novgorod and St. Petersburg will perform on the stage in total.

For the first time ever, the performance of the cantata will be complemented by the screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s film on large water screens in the size of 18x36 meters. Incredible water show will fascinate its viewers and make the event especially spectacular and unforgettable. Synthesis of majestic music, a genius film and a water show will display endless plains of Russia, images of enemy’s attacks and patriotic upsurge of the whole nation, the decisive Battle of Lake Peipus.
