The exhibition The New Man: Between Utopia and Tradition. Marking the 100th Anniversary of the USSR has opened in the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg.

“The main goal of the exhibition is to tell about the essence of socialist values, their establishment in public consciousness and promotion in everyday life”, Deputy Director of the Museum Elena Gerasimenko said.

The exposition introduces the exhibits acquired by the museum from the 1930s to the 19080s. It reflects general themes of friendship between the peoples and the image of Vladimir Lenin. The exhibition presents sections about wedding rituals of the Soviet time, about the struggle for women’s rights, the replacement of religious thinking. By exploring children’s toys, posters, household items, works of folk crafts, visitors will learn about the promotion of images of “the new man” in the USSR in various years.

The exhibition is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary since the foundation of the USSR, which will be celebrated on December 30, 2022.
