Internet and Museums: Museum of the Bank of Russia launched a portal, dedicated to the history of money circulation

23 November 2022

The Museum of the Bank of Russia has launched its own portal. It is dedicated to the history of money circulation and the people who managed the finances of the country in different times.

For over 160 years, the Bank of Russia has been creating and preserving a base of knowledge about the stages of development of the country’s financial and bank systems. The new website allows users to trace the journey of coins from the first pieces of silver to the commemorative collectible ones, to learn the secrets of watermarks on old bills and to evaluate the role of money in culture, literature and art.

For the first time ever, exclusive materials from the archive of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation will be published on the portal, alongside the stories of the exhibits, preserved in the museum’s holdings. They include a stater of the Bosporan Kingdom of the II century, a square coin from the era of Catherine I, Napoleonic fakes, coins of a fractional denomination of 7.5 rubles from the times of Nicholas II, money that did not get into circulation, Soviet and contemporary gold bars weighing about 12 kg, and other valuables. There are also presented items from the private collections of people who worked at the bank for many years.

Through the portal, it is possible to go on a virtual tour around the main building and the Museum of the Bank of Russia, as well as to sign up for the museum’s free excursion programs in Moscow and in 54 other cities of the country.
