Memory of Russia: New exhibition complex “Battle of Stalingrad” presented at the Museum of Artillery in St. Petersburg

The new exhibition complex “Battle of Stalingrad” has opened in the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps (St. Petersburg).

The oldest military museum in Russia presents an updated exhibition complex, dedicated to the Battle of Stalingrad, the 80th anniversary since the beginning of which is celebrated this year.

The exhibits displayed in the hall are authentic relics of the Battle of Stalingrad from the museum’s collections, evidence of the courage and heroism of the defenders of the Volga stronghold.

One of the sections showcases fragments of plaster, bricks, shards of bombs and shells from the famous Pavlov’s House, which became a symbol of courage, perseverance and heroism of the defenders of Stalingrad. Visitors will have an opportunity to see photos of this house from different years – pre-war, after massive artillery and mortar attacks by the Nazis, as well as after the restoration.

A separate group of exhibits consists of memorial weapons of the participants of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Soviet troops captured the war trophies of the German army, including a typewriter, on which the order of the Hitler’s command for the encircled group of the 6th Army to surrender was typed out at the headquarters of General Field Marshal Paulus. Today, it can be seen on permanent display.

The exhibition presents various maps and diagrams showing the course of the Battle of Stalingrad, comparative tables giving an idea of the ratio of forces and means, the results of one the greatest battles of World War II.

A selection of paintings from the museum's collections is also interesting, as it includes the iconic canvas by the famous Soviet battle painter Ilya Abelevich Lukomsky The Oath of Stalingraders which stands out in a special way.

In addition, the display features a large number of unique photographs. They capture the faces of the Red Army soldiers who defended the Volga stronghold, and civilians.

The new exhibition complex dedicated to the Battle of Stalingrad will be part of the permanent exhibition The Great Patriotic War. 1941-1945.
