10 December 2022

The State Hermitage Museum contains the world’s best collection of men’s costume of the late XVII – first quarter of the XVIII century – The Wardrobe of Peter I. Today, the collection features over 300 items of clothing and accessories.

Marking the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor, the Hermitage Museum presents the wardrobe of the monarch in the Costume Gallery at the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre. Never before in its entire history has this collection been exhibited to such an extent. Specialists and the public will have an opportunity to see the majority of items of the remarkable Hermitage collection: from Peter Alexeyevich’s children’s shirt to his latest formal suit, from the Dutch bostrogi to elegant French ensembles, from work jackets made of sail-cloth to luxurious home dressing gowns.

The Peter’s exposition in the Costume Gallery was preceded by a truly grandiose work of the specialists of the Hermitage’s Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Fabrics. Many revived masterpieces of the collection The Wardrobe of Peter I are exhibited for the first time.
