History and Culture: Exhibition “The Nutcracker. From Fairy Tales to Ballet” opened in Moscow

The State Museum and Exhibition Centre ROSIZO (Moscow) with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia presents the exhibition The Nutcracker. From Fairy Tales to Ballet based on Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s work. The exhibition also tells about the history of the creation of one of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's most famous ballets, The Nutcracker.

The exhibition presents unique editions of E. T. Hoffman's fairy tale, book illustrations, sketches of set decorations and theatrical costumes, personal belongings of P. I. Tchaikovsky from leading Russian museums, private collections and libraries.

A significant part of the exhibition is devoted to ballet performances on two main Russian stages – the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre and the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, including interpretations by such famous choreographers as A. A. Gorsky, F. V. Lopukhov, V. I. Vainonen and Y. N. Grigorovich. Of particular interest are sketches for foreign productions for the Cairo Opera and Ballet Theatre and for the Hungarian Opera and Ballet Theatre. Sketches of the production of The Nutcracker for the Cairo Opera and Ballet Theatre were donated to the Tchaikovsky Museum by the famous ballerina Magda Saleh.

The exhibition will run until February 19, 2023.
