Marking the Year of Teachers and Mentors in Russia: Exhibition “Ivan Aivazovsky. Mentors and Followers” presented in Rostov-on-Don

20 January 2023

The Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts presents the exhibition Ivan Aivazovsky. Mentors and Followers, marking the Year of Teachers and Mentors in Russia. Paintings by Aivazovsky, one of the unsurpassed marinists in Russian art of the 19th century, serve as the basis for the exposition. The painter is one of the few artists who received world recognition during his lifetime, becoming a member of five Academies of Arts: Rome, Florence, Stuttgart, Amsterdam and Petersburg.

Aivazovsky left his descendants a huge creative legacy – about six thousand works, creating a sublime ode to the sea elements. Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to see the paintings Moonlight Night, The Black Sea, The Death of Pompeii, as well as a portrait of A. Khalibyan, the mayor of Nakhichevan-on-Don, with whom the artist was friends and thanks to this visited the Don land.

By creating the exposition, the museum aimed to show not only the canvases of I. Aivazovsky, but also the paintings of his mentors and followers. His most remarkable teacher was M. N. Vorobyov, who passed on to his student the knowledge of academic drawing, the love for careful depiction of specific details, a lyrical and romantic view on the landscape. The exposition presents his painting The Black Sea Coast.

Visitors will also have a chance to get acquainted with the works of Aivazovsky’s students and followers, such as N. Chernetsov, L. Lagorio, V. Orlovsky, A. Bogolyubov.

The original works collected and presented together in the exposition create a unique opportunity to discover the new Aivazovsky, see his creative ideas, make sure of the brilliance of his skill and the skill of his mentors and students, as well as of the importance of preserving traditions and continuity in the visual arts.

The exhibition will run until September 17, 2023.
