History and Culture: Exhibition “The Grand Duchy. Treasures of the Vladimir-Suzdal Land” opens in Moscow

24 January 2023

On January 24, 2023, the exhibition The Grand Duchy. Treasures of the Vladimir-Suzdal Land opens for visitors at the New Tretyakov on Krymsky Val (Moscow).

The exposition features about 600 exhibits, including objects of decorative and applied art, icons.

The exhibition project The Grand Duchy. Treasures of the Vladimir-Suzdal Land is timed to coincide with the millennium of the first written mention of Suzdal. About 600 exhibits from the collections of the State Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve, presented in the display, are closely related to the history of the Vladimir-Suzdal Land. They include the famous golden gate of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Suzdal (1230s), an early list of one of the oldest Russian icons Theotokos of Bogolyubovo (the second half of the 16th century), and the first illustrated Alphabet Book (1694) by Karion Istomin, as well as objects discovered among archaeological treasures over the past 200 years. Some of them have not been shown before; in particular, the public has not yet seen the cover on the tombs of Princess Anna Khovanskaya (1633) and Prince Ivan Shuisky (1638).

Nowadays, objects belonging to the heritage of North-Eastern Russia are stored in leading Russian and foreign museums, but their main keeper is the State Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. There are 64 architectural monuments on its territory, seven of which are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List under the collective name White Stone Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal. For the first time, works related to the history of the Vladimir-Suzdal land are shown at such a large-scale exhibition.

The exhibition will run until May 10, 2023.
