History and Culture: Exhibition “The Passion of Christ” opens at the Andrey Rublev Museum in Moscow
On January 27, 2023, the exhibition The Passion of Christ opens at the Andrey Rublev Museum (Moscow). It is dedicated to the last days of Christ’s earthly life, when he was betrayed by one of his disciples, according to the Gospel. The events of Holy Week – the taking of Christ into custody, the trial, the flagellation and abuse of the Savior, the Crucifixion – are reflected in icons, works of decorative and applied art, sculpture, book graphics, and painting.

The key scene of the passion cycle – the Crucifixion of Christ – is presented in the monuments of the 14th – 19th centuries. The painting by the famous Russian artist M. V. Nesterov Holy Week, which is exhibited together with an early sketch, is dedicated to the same topic. Having conceived this painting right after the revolution, the artist completed the work only in 1933.
The exhibition participants are the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Historical Museum, the Ostankino and Kuskovo Museum-Reserve, the Museum of the Moscow Theological Academy “Church-Archeological Cabinet”, the Abramov Museum of Russian Icons, private collectors.
