World History and Culture: Exhibition “The Battle of the Peoples…, or the Foreign Campaigns of the Russian Army in 1813-1815” presented in Moscow Region

16 February 2023

The Arkhangelskoye Museum-Reserve (Moscow Region) presents the exhibition The Battle of the Peoples…, and the Foreign Campaigns of the Russian Army in 1813-1815 in the library of Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov.

In December 1812, Russian troops reached the borders of Russia. The army has suffered heavy losses, and it took time to put it in order; Prussia and Austria remained allies of France. However, Emperor Alexander I and the majority of the generals had no doubts that it was necessary to move forward.

Initially sluggish fighting resumed with renewed vigor in May 1813. The apotheosis of the campaign of 1813 was the famous “battle of the peoples” near Leipzig on October 16-19, in which Napoleon’s troops were defeated and began to retreat rapidly. The outcome of the war was a foregone conclusion.

Several dozen publications related to these events have been preserved in the library of Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov (1751–1831).

The section of foreign publications is represented by books of different genres.

Since many books published in the 1820s do not bear any traces of reading, it is possible that the Prince continued to replenish the corresponding section of the library, but due to his busyness and age, he no longer had time to get acquainted with the incoming publications.

The exhibition will run until February 26.
