Applicants for City of Military Glory Title

7 August 2009
This year six Russian cities have applied for the City of Military Glory title. These are Kozelsk, Zvenigorod, Kashira, Arkhangelsk, Nizhni Novgorod and Pskov. The decision will be made by the members of All-Russia Victory Organizing Committee in autumn of 2009. All applications will be considered from the point of view of historical justice and objective contribution to the victory in Great Patriotic War. Members of All-Russia Victory Organizing Committee will visit each of the applicants to examine how well the historical monuments are preserved and to see the condition of the streets named in the honor of Great Patriotic War heroes. Also they need to make sure that the population understands the importance of the title. In accordance with the Federal Law, the City of Military Glory title is awarded to cities of the Russian Federation where the fiercest battles of the Great Patriotic War took place and in the course of which, the defenders of the Fatherland showed courage, firmness, bravery and mass heroism contributing decisively to the outcome of military actions. In the cities which have already received the title there were erected the steles with a city emblem and the text of the Presidential decree on the honorary title award. Public events and celebratory salutes are organized there on February 23, May 9 and on the City Day. At a solemn ceremony the representatives of local governments are granted a special diploma signed by the President of the Russian Federation.
