18 November 2009

For the first time all the principal military encyclopedias, which had come out in Russian before 1917 are freely accessible via the Internet. The facsimile copies of the books are provided on the historical library’s “Runivers” website (www.runivers.ru). The researchers and devotees of the Russian history now have the opportunity to read and download “Military Encyclopedic Lexicon” (2nd edition 1852-1858 by M. I. Bogdanovich), "Encyclopedia of naval sciences” (edited by H. A. Leer, came out during 1883-1897), and also the "Military encyclopedia" (Publishing house “Association of I. D. Sytin”, 1911-1915). "Military Encyclopedic Lexicon" consists of 14 volumes. As the matter of fact, this is the first Russian Military encyclopedia.

Encyclopedias are available in the .DjVu format, which represents modern technologies of the picture compression, designed specially in order to preserve and distribute digital facsimile editions. This technology lets the user not just view and download the materials but also cite favourite fragments.
