66th Anniversary of Leningrad siege lift: "Action “Leningrad’s siege bread”

An action “Leningrad’s siege bread” commemorates the 66th anniversary of Leningrad’s liberation from the Nazis’ blockade, which is to be celebrated on January, 27. In a press conference organizers emphasized the goal of the event – to focus attention of teenagers and the youth to the memory of a heroic defence of the city on Neva, as well as courage and stoicism of its protectors. Within the framework of this event pupils will visit battlefields and see the military equipment, used during the siege of Leningrad, participate in ceremonies of laying flowers and take care of the memorials.

An important event is a rally at Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery, which will take place on January, 23. It will bring together war veterans, pupils from 40 schools and gymnasiums of St. –Petersburg and Leningrad Region. Everyone will have a chance to taste the bread, produced in accordance with the recipe of the besieged city in 1942. There is a little rye flour in it. It mainly consists of cottonseed-oilcake, cellulose, soya flour, sawdust and other ingredients. The bread ration weighs 125 grams and equals the minimum daily ration, provided during the siege. The taste of this bread is so familiar to the siege survivors. The Leningrad’s siege bread - is an action which has already expanded its boundaries and takes place abroad as well. In November 2009 the war veterans, residents of the besieged city and pupils visited Belarus. This trip was dedicated to the 68th anniversary of the legendary Road of Life foundation. St. – Petersburg residents brought to the city of Brest a daily ration of bread, ground from the Nevsky Pyatochok, Sinyavino Heights and other battlefields of the Great Patriotic War. They will join the permanent exposition of the “Brest fortress - Hero” museum.
