65th Great Victory Anniversary: Certificates conferring the honorary title of “City of Military Glory” awarded to Arkhangelsk, Kozelsk and Pskov

By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation from December, 8 2009 the honorary title “City of Military Glory” was presented to Arkhangelsk, Kozelsk and Pskov “in order to pay tribute for courage, stoicism, and mass heroism, displayed in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Fatherland”.

The Federal law on the honorary title “City of Military Glory” was adopted in May 2006. In accordance with it the honorary title is awarded to the cities of Russia, on the territory of which or in their immediate vicinity during desperate battles the defenders of the Fatherland displayed courage, stoicism, and mass heroism.

This honorary title was previously presented to 19 towns of Russia: Belgorod, Kursk, Oryol, Tuapse, Velikiye Luki, Veliky Novgorod, Dmitrov, Vyazma, Kronstadt, Naro-Fominsk, Rostov-on-Don, Polyarny, Voronezh, Luga, Yelets, Malgobek, Elnya, Vladikavkaz, Rzhev.

In accordance with the Presidential Decree in these cities of Military Glory a stele featuring the city emblem and the text of the Presidential Decree conferring the title are unveiled and some public functions and holiday fireworks take place on February, 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day, on May, 9 - Victory Day and on the city’s holiday.
