Archives: The National Archives recognized for award-winning education

23 February 2010

The education team at the National Archives has been awarded the prestigious Sandford Award, in recognition of providing outstanding heritage education.

The educational program brings history to life through inspiring taught sessions, delivered on site at the archives and remotely via videoconferencing, and the new virtual classroom services. The number of onsite and online visitors reached almost two million last year.

Andrew Payne, Head of Education and Outreach at The National Archives, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team and it is great to be recognized by those within the profession.”

According to the judges, the programs on offer are “well researched, resourced and presented with activities that are designed to stimulate pupils' imaginations, engage their interests, help them learn of, from and about the past and to have fun”.

The Sandford Award recognizes and promotes good practice in learning services within the historic and cultural environments, including historic houses, museums, galleries and places of worship.
