Russian language abroad: Russian language cabinet to open in Mexico

20 February 2010

Establishment of the first Russian Language cabinet in Mexico aroused keen interest both among Russians, who now permanently live in Mexico, as well as graduates of the former Soviet Universities. It opened at the National Polytechnic Institute (NPI), which has been maintaining close cultural and academic relations with the Mexican Association of the Russian language, operating in this Latin American country.

The opening ceremony of the Cabinet, which represents a library of books of different publishing houses, was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov. The President of the “Russkiy Mir” foundation, Vyacheslav Nikonov, within the framework of his official visit to Mexico donated about 700 editions of different genres to the Mexican Association of Russian language.

About 15 thousand Russians and 5 thousand former USSR universities’ graduates permanently live in Mexico. The Russian Language Cabinet has been opened in the Mexican University by an initiative of the Rossotrudnichestvo Federal Agency on the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation. Due to the donation of the “Russkiy Mir” foundation the National Polytechnic Institute has launched a library, whose collection totals almost one thousand editions: it contains both Russian classical literature, and modern works by Russian writers. These are fiction, textbooks, reference and academic literature.

The created library will become a good contribution to studying the Russian language, which has been taught at the National Polytechnic Institute. At this Institute the Mexican Association of Russian language activists are holding literary and musical evenings, dedicated to Russia on a regular basis. They always attract interest among Mexicans, which are fond of the rich Russian culture and history.
