Google is going to conduct an experiment and offer a fiber-optic ultra high speed broadband Internet service that can transmit 1 gigabit of data per second. It is 100 times faster than the average access speed in the USA. The plan is to build and test Google broadband by offering the service to 50,000 people, and eventually up to 500,000 people. The cost hasn’t yet been announced, but it is reported to be competitive.

Google asked local officials to apply before March, 26 to have the network in their communities. Within the framework of this project Google is going to achieve several goals.

Firstly, Google said it wanted to see what innovations high-speed broadband would encourage. Thus with a help of users, connected to 1 gigabit per second service, Google is going to test their web-applications of the next generation. "We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it's creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can't yet imagine”, - the company says.

Secondly, Google is going to learn about deploying fibre, and it plans to share its networks so that other internet service providers can connect to it. Another Google’s goal is providing “openness and choice” to its users. "We'll operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we'll manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory and transparent way", - Google informs.
