11 February 2010

The Ordensburg Castle of Georgenburg, which was built in 14th c., has been transferred to the Kaliningrad eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Local authorities are hoping to revive an ancient building. The Michael Archangel parish of the Russian Orthodox Church has accepted a responsibility for preservation of this historical and cultural monument.

This monument of history and culture has been still possessed by the Federal center – the territorial branch of the Federal Property Administration Agency in Kaliningrad oblast.

The Ordensburg Castle of Georgenburg was built in 1352. It is an object of cultural heritage of regional importance which today remains in the critical condition. In the pre-war time it was used as a dwelling house together with a famous stud farm, located nearby. Today only the southern part of the historical building, which contains the 3-storey citadel and a forburg, has been preserved.
