65th Great Victory Anniversary: Memorial to civilians – victims of the war

The Government of Kirov oblast turned to people of Novgorod with a suggestion to participate in a joint project on creation of the memorial to the victims of the Great Patriotic War.

The press-service of oblast Administration informs that the Governor of Novgorod oblast Sergei Mitin received a letter from the Governor of Kirov oblast Nikita Belykh with a suggestion to undertake a joint project in commemoration of the 65th Great Victory Anniversary. This is going to b the first memorial to people, who died in echelons, who didn’t take part in battles but became victims of the war.

The letter in particular says that in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War the charity foundation “Vyatka Land”, which was founded in Kirov oblast 20 years ago and since then has been popularizing cultural and scientific heritage, has come with an initiative of a joint project "Creation of a memorial complex in the town Kotelnich in memory of perished citizens of the USSR, who were evacuated in the time of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945". The foundation’s staff managed to find out that over 2700 citizens from many cities and former USSR Republics, who perished in echelons on the way to evacuation, were buried in the town Kotelnich in Kirov oblast.

Peoples from Novgorod oblast have been also buried there. The creation of the memorial in the town Kotelnich will help to immortalize civilians, and unveil their destiny to their kith and kin.

The construction of the memorial is supposed to be funded by the money, collected by citizens and organizations. Kirov oblast has created an organizational committee responsible for the memorial construction. Besides its draft design has been already completed and the website launched. The value of the monument totals approximately 5 million roubles.
