30 March 2010

A bronze bust of Ivan Konev, Soviet Military Commander, who led the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, will be erected in the street in Vologda, which is bearing his name.

These plans were announced in the Vologda City Administration. “The monument, 7 meters in height, will be put up in the area of the streets n.a. Konev and Mozhaysky. The erection works are reported to be launched in March”, - said the Head of the Architecture and Town Building Department Nikolai Mayorov.

He announced that the monument’s construction would be sponsored. Its inauguration will kick off on May, 9 – the day of 65th Great Victory anniversary celebration. The project’s author is Oleg Uvarov, sculptor from Moscow. It’s interesting that its model was approved by relatives of the Marshal Ivan Konev, thus, there will be a perfect likeness with the legendary military commander.

By the way, nowadays monuments to Marshal Konev have been already erected in Belgorod, Kirov and Prague (Czech Republic). Apart from Vologda other 13 streets in Russian cities, as well as in Ukraine and East Europe are named after Ivan Konev.
