Presidential library: 70th anniversary of St.-Petersburg Public Prosecutor’s Office

On March 19, 2010 in the Presidential Library was held the celebration ceremony of the 70th anniversary of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Leningrad - St.-Petersburg. The Russian Federation statesmen congratulated the Public Prosecutor’s Office employees. Among them the Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika, the Constitutional Court Chairman Valery Zor’kin, the Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov along with the leaders of the legislative and executive power of St.-Petersburg – the city governor Valentina Matvienko, the Legislative Assembly Chairman Vadim Tyulpanov.

Under the decree of the RF Prosecutor-General fourteen Public Prosecutor’s Office employees received the awards.

The meeting participants congratulated each other, received awards and encouragements, took a tour around the Library’s interior and saw a film on all the Prosecutor’s Office divisions’ activites.

According to the film the essential function of the Prosecutor’s Office today in St.-Petersburg is human rights. Arrears of wages payment, housing protection of the citizens, prevention of financial pyramid creation, cheated shareholders protection, combating corruption, minors protection, combating crime – these are just some of the areas of the Prosecutor’s Office activities.

Every day the Public Prosecutor’s Office employees take complaints from the citizens and prosecute for them. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of St.-Petersburg pays attention to the small and middle scale business protection and the citizens’ security.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office managed to prevent new types of criminality such as extremism, raiders, ‘black real estate’ agencies. It has solved a lot of crimes of extremist nature including those of the past years. The activity of some extremist groups had been ceased.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office veterans were also invited to the celebration ceremony. They noted that our country has suffered many changes but the essential function of the Prosecutor’s Office is still the same – laws observance control in the territory of our state.

1940 – the year of the St.-Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office second birth

After the October Social Revolution the institute of the Prosecutor’s control was abolished. 

In May of 1922 was founded the Petrograd provincial Prosecutor’s Office which was charged with the Prosecutor’s control over five provinces: Petrograd, Murmansk, Novgorod, Pskov and Cherepovets.

In 1927 the provinces were renamed to regions.

In 1931 the city of Leningrad was separated from the Leningrad region as an independent administrative and territorial unity of the RSFSR.

On March 16, 1940 the Leningrad region Prosecutor and the Prosecutor of Leningrad city signed the joint decree N 24/26 on separating of the municipal Prosecutor’s Office from the Prosecutor’s Office of the Leningrad region.

The Prosecutor’s Office protects the interests of a citizen and the state.
