Regions of Russia: Memorial “Tsar’s marathon” kicks off in Yekaterinburg

29 April 2010

The Yekaterinburg Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church has “certified” a memorial marathon track covering a distance from the Church of All Saints (the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land) in the heart of the city, erected on the site where the former Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and his family members were executed, to the Monastery on Ganina Yama (“Ganya’s Pit”), where the remains of Tsar’s family were discovered.

The initiator of the event became the Diocese’s Sport department, which used to organize various competitions, but they were mostly armsport events. An idea to organize a track for running and walking appeared only this year.

There are currently several marathon tracks in Russia, therefore appearance of the “Tsar’s marathon” track will become a major event for the whole Yekaterinburg.
