Internet resources: Average spam share in first quarter of 2010 amounts to 85,2%

27 April 2010

“Kaspersky lab” has released a report on spam share in the first quarter of 2010. An average share of spam in the mail traffic from January to March 2010 reached 85,2%. This figure corresponds to the aggregate figure of 2009. The least spam share was registered on March, 5, which was down to 78,0%. The highest level — 90,8% — was registered on February, 21.

The list of countries, being main spam providers, hasn’t dramatically changed compared to the 4th quarter 2009. The USA remains the leader with 16%, the second place takes India (7%), which has slightly passed ahead of Russia (6%). The 4th and 5th places are shared between the Republic of Korea and Vietnam (5%). The top ten is closed by Brazil (4%), Rumania (4%), Poland (3%), Ukraine (3%) and Germany (2%).

The average share of phishing e-mails in the 1st quarter of 2010 reached 0,57% of the total traffic. It is worth mentioning that if in January and February the percentage of phishing e-mails equaled an average figure of the last year, then in March it dropped dramatically making just 0,03% of mail traffic.

The first three months of 2010 didn’t introduce any changes into the key topics of spam — rubrics remained the same as in the last quarter of 2009: “Education”, “Medicine” and “Travel”. An interesting feature is an increased share of spam of the category “Computer fraud”. As a rule, this figure is fluctuating between 3 and 8% of the total number, however in the first quarter it reached 9,1%.
