New photographs, which put the spotlight on contribution of Soviet scientists to Victory in the Great Patriotic war, have been released in the Russian Academy of Sciences. They can be found on the portal "Windows of Russia. National photo-chronicle".

These are war-time photos, provided by the Archive of the Academy of Sciences and released for the first time. Among them are portraits of prominent scientists, minutes of sessions of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, photographs, taken during researches for the needs of defence. Among them are Igor Kurchatov, who in 1941 was appointed director of the nascent Soviet nuclear program, whose team successfully detonated bombs, and who was later to become the Academician; Academician Mikhail Lavrentyev, creator of new explosives and Academician Yevgeny Paton, who created a welding technique to improve the armour of Soviet tanks.

The portal "Windows of Russia. National photo chronicle" – is a joint project of the Russian Academy of Sciences, ITAR-TASS and the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of Russian Federation. It is possible not only view photos but also submit your own photographs, dedicated to the history of Russia, photos from family albums and archives. What is more, the Russian Academy of Sciences and ITAR-TASS unveil photos from their archives, including those, which became famous worldwide. Thus, legendary images “Battery commander” (“Kombat”) or "Red banner over Reichstag" find themselves side by side with photos of big-eared boys from home photo album, who sacrificed their lives to save their Fatherland, and who still live in the memory of their kith and kin.
