Regions of Russia: Historical reproduction of “Battle on the ice” launched in Pskov oblast

The International Festival of the “Battle on the ice” historical reproduction will kick off in Pskov oblast on April, 18.

The Battle of the Lake Peipus (Chudskoe lake) - "Battle on the ice" took place on April, 5 (April, 18 according to the new style) 1242. The armed force of the Prince of Novgorod Alexander Nevsky defeated the Army of Livonian Order (Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order). After that victory knights of the Livonian Order in 1243 didn’t lay claims to their conquests in Russian lands. In that year a peace treaty was concluded between Novgorod and Livonian Order.

The Festival "Battle on the ice" will be launched in Pskov oblast for the 4th time. The first military historical performance “Battle on the ice” was mounted in April 2007. This year reconstruction of the great Battle of the Lake Peipus will take place close to the site of historical battle - in the village Samolva, Gdovsky district.

The battle is announced to bring together about 400 warriors-performers from Russia, Ukraine and Belorus, who are going to wear real suits of armor. One of the most memorable events of the upcoming “Battle of the ice” will be a tournament.

The festival’s organizers are the Pskov Oblast Administration, the Pskov oblast State Committee for Culture, the All-Russian military historical pubic movement and Gdovsky district Administration.
