9 May 2010

The state is going to strengthen the control over teaching history at schools, particularly over the content of textbooks, reported the Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin within the framework of the meeting with participants of the Great Patriotic War.

During the conversation one of the veterans complained of a small number of lessons of history, dedicated to the study of the Great Patriotic War. “I do agree”, - Vladimir Putin responded. – But its not only the number of hours that matters, but also the very content. “We pay attention to it, undertake attempts, but they should be systematic”, - the Prime Minister added.

“It should be found out what is being written in textbooks, who is doing this, who is backing it and what purpose is being pursued”, - Vladimir Putin stressed.

What is more, the Chairman of the Government called for returning of the lessons of basic military training at schools. “This is an important issue – preparation for serving in the Armed Forces”, - he said. He is certain that it is especially urgent “due to decrease of the time of military service”. “Both at schools and special institutions such work should be implemented”, - the Prime Minister stressed.
