The 977th writing on birch bark discovered in Novgorod
Archaeologists discovered in Novgorod the Great a fragment of another writing om birch bark.
The 24 centimeters-long piece of birch bark which dates, according to some preliminary estimations, back to 12-13th centuries, was discovered at Troitsky excavation to the south of Novgorod Kremlin Detinets. In scholars’ opinion the excavated area was the place of convergence of several mansions.
On June 17-18 three more writings on birch bark were discovered at the same area. Two of them, written supposedly by the same man, represent promissory notes. The third one contains just a few letters.
Fourth writings on birch bark discovered during the 2010 field season are given the numbers 974 to 977. The archaeologists believe that at Troitsky excavations they will find some more of the writings.
