World history: ancient city Avaris discovered in Egypt

Austrian archaeologists working at excavations in the Eastern Delta of the Nile in Egypt have determined the location of the ancient capital of Hyksos - Asiatic nomads who partly occupied Egypt in17th century BC.

The city discovered under the ground had the name of Avaris.

According to the Head of the Supreme Council for Antiquities Affairs of Egypt Zaha Havas, near Tal-ad-Dabaa city to the North-East of Cairo the geophysical researches have been effectuated allowing the scholars to identify the exact borders of a little known city of Avaris.

‘The obtained images enable to see in detail the underground city with its streets, houses, cemetery and to define precisely its borders’, - said Mr. Havas.

The Head of the Supreme Council for Antiquities Affairs added also that within the precincts of Avaris was discovered a port, the riverbed of Nile could be seen as well as two islands.

The nomads from Asia Hyksos invaded the northern part of Egypt during the reign of a weak 12th Pharaoh dynasty in the 17th century BC and installed near the Nile Delta. Hyksos people ruled the occupied lands for over hundred years and founded their own capital Avaris. After the Hyksos were defeated around 1550 BC, the Egyptians erased all the traces of this people stay in the territory of the Ancient Egypt.
