A travelling exhibition entitled “Public libraries of Moscow: from past to present” will kick off on June 9 at the Moscow City Duma building. The exhibition, organized by the I. S. Turgenev Library with a support of the Central Administrative District prefecture, is marking the 125th foundation anniversary of public libraries’ network in Moscow. It is not by accident that the exhibition will be launched in the Moscow City Duma building. It was in accordance with Duma’s resolution that the first free public library (athenaeum) was opened in the pre-revolutionary time in the capital. It was founded in 1885 in the honor of the Great Russian writer Ivan S. Turgenev.

Materials, displayed at the exhibition, shed the light on the development of library system in Moscow, spanning the history of private paid libraries up to modern multifunctional complexes – information intellect-centers. Several exposition’s stands are dedicated to the Moscow City Duma’s work.

The exhibition is open up to June 18.
