Internet resources: Historical African newspapers resource goes online

29 July 2010

The University of Delaware Library announces the availability of a new electronic resource, “African Newspapers”. “African Newspapers” provides access to more than 40 fully searchable African newspapers published between 1800 and 1922. Languages include English, German, French, Portuguese, Afrikaans and others.

“African Newspapers” is the second phase of the “World Newspaper Archive” project undertaken by the Center for Research Libraries in partnership with Readex. The Center for Research libraries, CRL a global resources network, brings together more than 250 college, university, and independent research libraries as its members.  The University of Delaware Library is a charter participant in the “World Newspaper Archive” and a CRL member.

Representing the largest fully searchable collection of historical newspapers from around the globe, the “World Newspaper Archive” aims to encompass historical newspapers published in Africa, Europe, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other regions. The first phase of the project was “Latin American Newspapers”.

The database “African Newspapers” is available to University of Delaware faculty, students, and staff as a licensed resource from the library databases link on the library website or on the CRL website.
