International organizations: UNESCO committed to preserve cultural heritage of Haiti

9 July 2010

The first meeting of the International Coordinating Committee for the salvage of the Haiti cultural heritages will be held on July 7-8 at UNESCO headquarters. Chaired by the Haitian Minister for Culture and Communication Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue, the committee is a body set up by UNESCO to provide help to the Haitian authorities in restoring the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

The committee is expected to decide the priorities in reconstruction of buildings, natural landscapes and damaged historic centers and the restoration of museums, archives and libraries, damaged by the earthquake on January 12 2010. It also aims to revive the creative industry and to promote the rich intangible heritage of the country.
