Regions of Russia: 14th century cathedral to be restored in Novgorod

The Russian Ministry of Culture has allotted 10 million rubles for restoration of the Church of Annunciation in Novgorod.

Four million rubles will be spent for development of the project on preservation of the historical building raised in 1343; another six million – for the works of reconstruction. The order of the works should be approved before the end of 2010. Contractors of the project will be defined in accordance with the competition results.

The Church of Annunciation in Rurik ancient settlement was partly destroyed during the Great Patriotic war. It is situated on the site which had been the residence of Novgorod princes since the 10th century. Earlier in this are numerous archaeological findings had been made. For instance, the seals of Princes Vladimir Monomakh and Dmitry Donskoy were found there. In 2003 in one of the ancient churches some frescos of 12th century were discovered.
