Libraries of Russia: Exhibition “Vologda – St. Petersburg: link of times and generations” mounted at the National Library of Russia

The exhibition “Vologda – St. Petersburg. Link of times and generations” was launched on September 17 2010 in the new building of the National Library of Russia.

The exhibition is based on exhibits from the holdings of the National Library of Russia and the Vologda Oblast Universal Scientific Library. The National Library of Russia has unveiled the most valuable articles of the Vologda book traditions. A special section is dedicated to saints – founders of monasteries in Vologda krai, as well as researchers who studied the history of monasteries. Among the exhibits are hagiographies, books from monasteries’ libraries, images of icons and photographs of cloisters, guides to monasteries, contemporary illustrated editions.

Visitors of the exhibitions will have a chance to learn many interesting facts about the history, culture of Vologda and its prominent people. The life and work of many Russian poets and writers like Konstantin Batyushkov, Innokentiy Annenskiy, Feodor Sologub, Igor Severyanin, was closely connected with St. Petersburg and Vologda.

Among other exhibits are the examples of Vologda applied arts, as well as maps, posters, coats of arms of the towns, postal cards (prints) and printed materials about Vologda and Vologda Oblast. The electronic information resource will serve as a visual illustration to the exhibition: most interesting books and autographs from the library’s Rare Book Division, Vologda sacred places, information on life of famous people of Vologda will be displayed on the screen nonstop. The story about old towns, architectural monuments and the most interesting natural objects of Vologda Oblast will be available on the interactive map of Oblast.
