Museums: Exhibition “Grigory Gagarin. 200th birthday anniversary” mounted in St. Petersburg

The exhibition “Grigory Gagarin. 200th birthday anniversary” opened on December 23 2010 at the St. Michael’s Castle of the Russian State Museum, St. Petersburg.

For the first time in the century visitors are given a chance to see paintings and drawings, book illustrations and architectural designs, lithographs, icons and early experiences in photography of a gifted and many-sided artist, creator of the Museum of Christian Antiquities, the vice president of the Imperial Academy of Arts, Prince Grigory Gagarin.

The exhibition features about 150 exhibits, including materials and documents from the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Historical Museum, the Russian Ethnographic Museum, the Russian Literature Institute, the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts. The “Portrait of Sophia Alekseevna Gagarina in the Garden”, whose location was previously unknown, has been provided by the St. Petersburg private collection.
