8 December 2010

In the third quarter of 2010, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief, published by VeriSign Inc., provider of Internet infrastructure services, the number of top-level domain names topped 200 million. Registrations have grown by 13.3 million, or 7 per cent year-over-year, while in the national zone of Russia — 4%. As to the number of domains registered in the .ru zone Russia occupies the 10th place of the world ratings. In 2010 Russia entered Top 10 countries with the most active domain name registration in national zones. In particular, in the third quarter the rise of registered domains in Russia, Brazil, Argentina and Australia equaled 4% as compared with the same period last year, VeriSign report reads. These countries as well as Germany, UK, China, Netherlands, Italy and Poland share 60% of all registrations in national zones. The base of Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) was 79.2 million domain names, a 2.4 per cent increase from a year ago. In the world Top 10 of domain zones Russia stays in the last place, however since the last year there were some changes in this so-called top. China went down from the second to the seventh place, losing the number of registered names. According to figures of the National Domain Coordination Center, in November the newly opened .рф zone registered 615 000 domains — VeriSign study considers just domains, registered in .ru zone. VeriSign’s Brief stresses that non-Latin domain zones, for example, Russian or Arabic, are not very convenient, as they don’t provide an option of receiving and sending mail to other Latin zones mailboxes etc.
