On January 15 2011 a medieval Finnish city Turku and the capital city of Estonia Tallinn were announced European capitals of culture of 2011.

The European Capital of Culture program was launched in 1985. This initiative aims to attract attention to the cultural heritage of different countries.

As a rule, the capital of culture status gives a start to major art and educational projects in selected cities.

Turku has opened an exhibition center, which will put on display 50 expositions, while Tallinn has launched a concert.
