Regions of Russia: Conference “Siberian Cossacks: History and the Present” kicks off in Omsk

On February 25 2011 Omsk launched the All-Russian scientific and practical conference “Siberian Cossacks: History and the Present”. It has been organized by the Omsk Oblast Administration, Dostoevsky Omsk State University, Omsk Affiliate of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Siberian Cossacks Society, Omsk-Tara Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The conference brought together representatives from Omsk Oblast, regions of Russia, and other countries, such as Argentina, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

The work of the conference was divided into following sections:

- “History and the Present of the Cossacks in Siberia”,

- “Military and historical education: historical experience and modern state”,

- “Traditional culture of the Cossacks of Russia and problems of its revival”.

Participants of the conference familiarized themselves with electronic resources of the Omsk Regional Access Center to Information Resources of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library which cast the light on the history of Siberian Cossacks.

Specially for participants of the scientific and practical conference Omsk regional center launched a book exhibition “The Glory of Cossacks”, which puts on show both modern and pre-revolutionary editions. Rare editions on history of the Siberian Cossack Host from the collection of the Pushkin Omsk State Regional Scientific Library captured special attention of visitors.
