IT and Security: Newly launched service monitors threats on Internet

18 February 2011

Symantec has announced the launch of its new Norton CyberCrime Index service – a new free solution to inform users on daily cybercrime risks, tracked by Symantec’s analytical and monitoring real-time products.

The Norton Cybercrime Index is said to consist of one number indicating today’s threat level. The number is based on an algorithm that calculates data from three sources: Symantec Global Intelligence Network, ID Analytics and DataLossDB. The new tool also makes use of data submitted by many customers of Norton 360.

Data received by the company is completely anonymous and is used merely to assess the threat level on Internet. All this information is fed into a model and algorithm, endorsed by Symantec jointly with the Institute for Cyber Security at The University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA), to figure out complex threat level.

The new service also offers a more elaborate report on the threat level with clarifying information and a threat distribution map.
