World history: Russia and Italy celebrate anniversary of Suvorov’s campaigns

Russia and Italy are going to hold celebrations timed to 212th anniversary of the Italian and Swiss campaigns of the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov.

On March 28, 2011 the Annunciation Church of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg, where Alexander Suvorov was buried, will conduct a memorial service, the Suvorov Museum in St. Petersburg will hold the International conference “Russian names in the history of Europe: Alexander Suvorov”, while the Hermitage Museum will launch a commemoration meeting.

Memorable events will go on in Italy during May 21-27. They will include a roundtable discussion, a cycle race following the route of the army under the command of Alexander Suvorov in the Northern Italy. In Lomello, whose local castle housed Suvorov’s headquarters, will be opened a commemorative plaque and a bust to the commander. It will also mount an exhibition of materials and documents.
