Last year Google Docs introduced its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) feature, a free service, which allowed users to upload images and PDF files that were automatically converted to editable text. Google has recently announced that this feature had been extended to support 34 languages including Russian.

Documents necessary to be recognized may be uploaded to Google’s cloud service like ordinary files. Users need to select conversion options, for example, convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents and choose the document language.

After that the text will be automatically recognized enabling users to edit it using Google Docs.

The Optical Character Recognition feature was introduced by Google Docs in June 2010 and initially recognized information in five languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Presently there are several programs which provide text recognition options, one of the most popular of them is ABBYY FineReader.
