IT and Libraries: Conference “Quality assessment and control of scanned physical documents” in Korolev

April 19–20, 2011 at the facility of the Institute for Advanced Training in Aerospace Engineering (Korolev, Moscow Oblast) was held the International theoretical and practical conference “Quality assessment and control of scanned physical documents”.

The conference addressed the problems of quality assessment of scanned physical documents, study of current scanning practice and technical requirements for scans in different libraries, archives and other institutions, which accumulate physical documents.

The purpose of the conference is to generalize scanning experience, found a working group responsible for developing of guidelines on preservation of the documentary heritage via scanning, while the long-term plans cover foundation of the inter-state quality standards for scanned materials.

The Republic of Belarus was represented by Kostyukevich N.G., who delivered a report “Experience of producing electronic counterparts of physical documents in the National Library of Belarus: approaches to scanning of different types of documents, technical requirements for scanning”.

Participants of the conference shared ideas on possible further steps for standardization of requirements for document scanning. One of the immediate tasks was called preparation for working out guidelines on scanning works and attracting attention of wide library community at “Crimea-2011” conference to the importance of solution of standardization problems in this area.
