Competition Pictures of the Year is the world's oldest contest of journalistic photography. The first time it was held in 1944 at the University of Missouri, and since then the university is responsible for conducting the contest. The Piictures of the Year emerged at the international level in 2001, with an additional word in the title - Pictures of the Year International.

This year the jury had to choose from 50,000 photographs. Winners will be awarded at a ceremony taking place at Newseum on April 29.
