Society and Culture: Exhibition in St. Petersburg marks the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture

May 16, 2011 the National Library of Russia, New building (St. Petersburg) opened an exhibition of calligraphy “Image and Letter”.

The exhibition is being held as a part of celebrations timed to the Day of Written language and Culture – Memorial Day of the Saints Cyril and Methodius, creators of Slavic written language, which has been celebrated in Russia as a state holiday on May 24 since 1991.

The exhibition focuses on the variety of calligraphy areas: book graphics, calligraphic improvisation, type’s historical form.

The exposition unveils works by pupils of Pyotr Chobitko School of Calligraphy founded at the facility of the St. Petersburg State Art-Industrial Academy. Works of calligraphers have been completed in various techniques. Of particular attention are such Russian types, as Vyaz and cursive writing. A special section called “From A to Izhitsa” brings the focus on works of school’s young pupils. These are calligraphic sketches, manuscripts, and items of decorative and applied art.

The exhibition has been organized by the National Library of Russia by commission from the Ministry of Culture of Russia.
